A modified tire ovitrap for monitoring Aedes albopictus in the field.

چکیده
Keyword Index: Aedes albopictus, tire trap description, surveillance tool, Dominican Republic. With the introduction of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) into the Americas from southeast Asia and Japan (Hawley 1988), many surveillance tools originally used for Aedes aegypti Linn. programs were adopted to monitor the new invading species. In the continental U.S.A., conventional ovitraps (Fay and Eliason 1966) and modified ovitraps using seed germination paper substrates (Steinly et al. 1991) have been used for collecting eggs. However, tire casing traps were used for collecting aquatic immature stages (Niebylski and Craig 1994) while the New Jersey Light traps, CDC light traps, Duplex cone, Bi-directional Fay and Omni-directional traps were used for collecting adult Ae. albopictus (Jensen et al. 1994, Crans et al.1996). In the rest of the Americas, tire surveys (larval surveys) and ovitraps have been used in Mexico (IbañezBernal and Martínez-Campos 1994), larvitraps in Cuba (Broche and Borja 1999), larval surveys in Guatemala (Ogata and Lopez-Samoyoa 1996), and larval surveys in Argentina (Rossi et al. 1999) have been used to monitor the immature stages of the invading populations of Ae. albopictus. In the Dominican Republic, Ae. albopictus was first discovered in 1993 (Pena 1993). To monitor their infestation level, we used a motor bicycle tire trap that exploited the mosquito preference for used tires. This paper describes a modified tire trap device developed to monitor the oviposition behavior of Ae. albopictus and facilitate the inspection and collection of immature stages in the field.

Surveillance of Aedes mosquitoes in a university campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Ovitrap surveillance was initiated for eight continuous weeks to determine the distribution and abundance of Aedes sp. mosquitoes in the University of Malaya campus, Kuala Lumpur, and the impact of meteorological conditions on the Aedes populations. Two study areas within the campus were selected: Varsity Lake and Seventh Residential College. The abundance of Aedes populations in Varsity Lake w...
متن کاملLaboratory and field evaluations of oviposition responses of Aedes albopictus and Aedes triseriatus (Diptera: Culicidae) to oak leaf infusions.
Organic infusions created by fermenting white oak (Quercus alba L.) leaves in water were evaluated as sources of attractant odorants and contact oviposition stimulants for gravid Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Aedes triseriatus (Say). Infusions were bioassayed in the laboratory by giving single females a choice of ovipositing in 1 container with infusion and 7 containers with water. Ae. albopictu...
متن کاملReplacement of Aedes aegypti by Aedes albopictus in Mobile, Alabama.
Aedes albopictus was first detected in Mobile, AL, in 1987 during a CDC sponsored ovitrap survey in the Historic District. A comparison of ovitrap and larval surveys, done in 1957, 1984, 1987 and 1990, indicates that Ae. albopictus had replaced Aedes aegypti in urban Mobile. Possible explanations of this replacement, including displacement, are discussed.
متن کاملEffects of tire leachate on the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus and the native congener Aedes triseriatus
Discarded vehicle tire casings are an important artificial habitat for the developmental stages of numerous vector mosquitoes. Discarded vehicle tires degrade under ultraviolet light and leach numerous soluble metals (e.g., barium, cadmium, zinc) and organic substances (e.g., benzothiazole and its derivatives [BZTs], polyaromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]) that could affect mosquito larvae that inhab...
متن کاملOviposition site preference of Aedes albopictus in the laboratory.
Several parameters on the oviposition site preference of Aedes albopictus were studied, including color, container type, salinity, and water type. Dark-colored glass jars, especially black, blue, and red ones were preferred over light-colored jars. The black-colored ovitrap with a paper strip performed better than other types of containers. Seasoned tap water had the highest egg count when comp...
